Review of Midnight Alley
So far, every book of the Morganville Vampires series has been, well, bloody brilliant. Midnight Alley lives up to its expectations, and had me hooked from the moment I read the first word (which is "the," by the way). As you very well know-- assuming you have already read books one and two-- the pace is deadly fast and Rachel Caine always throws in a sudden twist somewhere in the last two sentences of her books; Midnight Alley, of course, stays consistent with her tendencies. Sudden twist it is.
Romance plays a much larger part in this book than in the others. Honestly, I expect Book Four to increase in the romance meter as well, for it seems as the series continues, romance seasons the story more and more. To me, it seems like there is more attitude in this book as well. With Claire growing accustomed to the danger of Morganville, it is only natural for her to change: get braver (or stupider), older (duh), and she gets some guts. Anyway, Midnight Alley digs deeper into the people of Morganville, shows their true colors (excuse the cliché). Hey, even the villains and just downright unlikable people get bright, shiny moments (yet another cliché?).
All in all, I found Midnight Alley a quick, fun, and enticing read, and, once again, remember it is about vampires, so (need I even remind you?) of course, it's fantastic. Oh, and just a few words of advice: when you get to the end, try not to yell at the book out loud.
