Review of Glass Houses
Vampires, vampires, vampires … what can I say? Unfortunately, I had never even heard of Rachel Caine's series before, well, today. I wasn't terribly enthused when I began the book; I was actually rather reluctant, just reading the book because it happened to be in front of me. Perhaps my favorite thing about the book was the mystery preventing me from deciding what kind of vampires occupied Morganville-- were they shameless blood-drinkers, were they penitent lost souls, were they evil, good, neither? The fun of reading Glass Houses lies in discovery.
I greatly appreciated the fact that Rachel Caine didn't waste page after page developing romance-- the romance carries on as merely a compliment to the story as a whole. That alone I felt strengthened the book. So I loved the beginning, I loved the middle, but the end was … unsatisfying. I felt cheated. Seriously, it was as if I had spent all this time reading a book, got to the big finale, which I felt was exciting enough, but then I was left with an unfairly hooked ending. I mean, I was going to read the next book anyway, so I felt it cruel to leave me hanging.
Okay, let me lay this out for you. The book is funny and mysterious and fast-paced and clever, but the darn ending is annoying. Worst of all, I have to wait for two days until I can read book two, The Dead Girls' Dance, because sadly I have only the first book with me. Picture this: Caroline, pathetically bookless and sufficiently irritated, bangs book one against her head repeatedly for two days. So pretty much, after you read book one, book two is sort of a necessity.
